Patudu (ist)

Jakarta

( key / key )

14 Wasit/Juri PON Bakal Diperiksa

Posted: 18 Jul 2008 12:00 PM CDT

( key / key )

Four dead in Kurd rebel clash in S.E. Turkey

Posted: 18 Jul 2008 10:10 AM CDT

Tunceli, Turkey (ANTARA News/Reuters) - Two Turkish soldiers and two Kurdish guerrillas were killed in clashes in southeast Turkey over the past 24 hours, security sources said on Friday.

Two rebels and one soldier were killed in a clash in Bingol late on Thursday, which started after security forces encountered a group of separatist Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) members in the restive region east of the town of Tunceli.

Additional troops were sent to the area for back-up and the clashes were still continuing, the sources, who declined to be named, told Reuters.

Another soldier was killed in a separate clash early on Friday in mountainous Sirnak, near the Iraqi border. The operations, backed by attack helicopters in Cudi mountains, where security forces detected some PKK militants, were continuing as well.

Turkey`s military has recently launched a major offensive against rebel hideouts in the region.

PKK fighters also regularly enter Turkey from the mountains of northern Iraq, where several thousand of the militants are based. This year the Turkish military has launched a series of raids against the group in northern Iraq.

The PKK, regarded as a terrorist group by Turkey, the United States and European Union, took up arms against the Turkish state in 1984.

Some 40,000 people have been killed in the conflict. (*)

Myanmar should release political detainees: seasian officials

Posted: 18 Jul 2008 10:10 AM CDT

Singapore (ANTARA News/AFP) - Myanmar should release all political detainees, senior Southeast Asian officials say in a recommendation to their foreign ministers.

“The SOM (senior officials` meeting)… called on the release of all political detainees,” a senior Southeast Asian official said.

If endorsed, the recommendation will be included in a joint statement to be issued after a two-day meeting of the ministers that starts Sunday, the official said.

The proposed paragraphs on Myanmar also call on the junta “to take bolder steps in what they`re doing to move along the roadmap to democracy,” the official said.

However, it could still be amended by the ministers from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

The 10-member ASEAN has been widely criticised for its policy of
“constructive engagement” regarding Myanmar, which is under EU and US sanctions over its human rights record.

Myanmar`s detainees include democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been held under house arrest for most of the past 18 years. (*)

PLN proposing Java-Sumatra power trasmission cable project

Posted: 18 Jul 2008 09:30 AM CDT

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - State-owned electricity company PLN is proposing a 650-km Java-Sumatra power transmission cable project to the National Development Planing Board (Bappenas) worth US$1.8 billion, its president director said.

“We have finished a feasibility study for the project and we have proposed it to Bapennas,” PLN President Director Fahmi Mochtar said here on Friday.

He said based on estimates the mega power project would cost US$1.8 billion.

The high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission cable would transmit 2,000 MW from power plants in South Sumatra to Java via the Sunda Strait.

The tranmission of such a volume of power required the conversion of the electricity current from alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC).

Therefore, facilities to convert power from AC to DC would be built near the South Sumatra power plants and facilities for conversion from DC to AC near Jakarta.

The HVDC cable transmission project would be the first of its kind in Indonesia while not many companies were doing business in this field.

PLN has been imposing alternating power cuts in several parts of the country of late due to shortage of power supplies.

The PLN president director said recently the company had until now been having an electricity deficit of 600 MW per day or about 3,000 MW per week. (*)
