| Droughts cut RI`s tea production by 20 percent Posted: 31 Jul 2008 05:10 PM CDT Bandung, (ANTARA News) - Droughts that have happened over the past two months have caused Indonesia`s tea production to drop by 20 percent, an industry spokesman said. “Although the peak of the dry season is expected to happen only in August, severe droughts have already happened causing tea production to decline by 20 percent,” Abdul Halik, chairman of the Indonesian Tea Board, said here Thursday. He said under normal weather conditions, the productivity rate of tea plantations in Indonesia was 230-250 kilograms per hectare but during the dry season it usually fell to 110-180 kilograms per hectare. “The dry spells will obviously have an impact but I am sure the national tea production target of 65,000 tonnes will be met,” he added. He said severe drought had hit tea plantations in the Penglejar Farm area of state plantation company PTPN VIII but national tea production at the end of the first semester or June of 2008 had reached 45-49 percent of the annual target. “Our tea production performance in the first semester of 2008 seems to be quite alright. We hope production will increase during this year`s rainy season. We truly hope the droughts will not last too long,” he said. Halik also said the national tea production target figure of 65,000 tons would mean an income of 100 million US dollars while the 2007 production target of 45,000 tons was valued at around 80 million US dollars.(*) Like this Post? | Heikki Masih di McLaren Musim Depan Posted: 31 Jul 2008 01:20 PM CDT AFP/Bertrand Guay Budapest - Formasi pembalap McLaren Mercedes musim depan tak akan mengalami perubahan setelah Silver Arrows memastikan Heikki Kovalainen akan bertahan. Seperti banyak kontrak pembalap di F1, deal Heikki bersama McLaren diyakini cuma berdurasi semusim namun dengan opsi perpanjangan setahun. Dan McLaren sepertinya cukup puas dengan performa pembalap Finlandia itu untuk kemudian memutuskan mempertahankan dia untuk musim depan. Heikki yang mulai bergabung dengan McLaren di musim ini sering meraih hasil memuaskan di sesi kualifikasi. Namun nasib buruk serta penampilan yang tak stabil membuatnya baru sekali naik podium di GP Malaysia lalu. Hingga kini memang belum ada konfirmasi resmi dari pihak McLaren terkait hal tersebut. Tapi Presiden McLaren F1, Martin Whitmarsh, sudah mengkonfirmasi hal tersebut dalam wawancaranya dengan Autosport. “Kami menyambut kedatangan Heikki di awal tahun. Keputusan tersebut diambil dalam technical meeting antara BLI, panpel, pengawas pertandingan, serta kedua klub yang akan berlaga –Persija dan Persijap Jepara– di Kantor PSSI, kompleks stadion Gelora Bung Karno, Jakarta, Kamis (31/7/2008) malam. “Techinal meeting memutuskan besok tak ada pertandingan,” terang Ketua Panitia Pelaksana Hanifditya. Keputusan pembatalan jadwal pertandingan tersebut diambil karena masih belum didapatkannya izin dari Polda Metro Jaya terkait dengan masalah keamanan. Ini bukan kali pertama tim “Macan Kemayoran” urung berlaga. Sebelumnya, partai antara Persija kontra Persita Tangerang juga tak jadi digelar karena alasan serupa. Akibat dua pembatalan tersebut, kedua laga itu mengalami perubahan jadwal sampai dengan waktu yang belum bisa ditentukan. “BLI menetapkan pertandingan Persija rescheduling dengan waktu tidak lebih dari putaran kedua. | Garuda aims to double profit to Rp516 billion Posted: 31 Jul 2008 09:30 AM CDT Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Garuda Indonesia intends to double its net profit this year to Rp516 billion from a year earlier, its president director said. “We aim to increase it by up to two-fold,” Emirsyah Satar said following a discussion on state-owned companies` performance here on Thursday. The profit would be the result of the company`s success in raising transport capacity, improving efficiency and expanding its market, he said. Garuda would increase its fleet including operating planes under a lease contract as part of efforts to improve its transport capacity, he said. The national flag carrier is in the process of ordering 50 Boeing 737-800s and 10 Boeing 777-30ERs and three Airbus planes under a lease contract. The 50 Boeing 737-800s will be delivered in 2009 and 10 Boeing 777-30ER in 2010. Last year, Garuda posted a profit of Rp258 billion after it suffered losses for three consecutive years. Garuda suffered a loss of Rp811.3 billion in 2004, Rp688.4 billion in 2005 and Rp197 billion in 2006. | VP asks SME`s to brand their products Posted: 31 Jul 2008 09:30 AM CDT Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Vice President M Jusuf Kalla has asked small- and medium-scale businessmen to brand their products so that Indonesians consumers can feel proud in using the goods. “It is time for us to brand our products. If so far, women feel proud when they consume things with the Gucci brand and men feel the same about Dunhill- and Kenzo-branded goods, people today should be made proud of using domestically-branded products,” Kalla said when opening the 6th Small- and Medium-scale Enterprises and Cooperatives (SME`s Co) Festival here on Thursday. Kalla said the abundant domestic natural resources such as wood, gold, leather, even water hyacinths, and the capital made available by the government through the people`s business credit (KUR) scheme would be useless if the Indonesian people did not like to use the domestic products. According to the vice president, China and Japan could become developed countries because their people were proud of using their own domestic products. “How could we be admired by others if we don`t appreciate our own domestic products,” Kalla said, adding that all developed countries made progress by starting to sell first their domestic products to other countries. | Indonesia`s oil output reaches 979,602 bpd Posted: 31 Jul 2008 09:10 AM CDT Jakarta, July 31 (ANTARA) - Indonesia`s crude oil and condesate production in the first seven months of 2008 reached an average of 979,602 barrels per day (bpd), the Upstream Oil and Gas Executive Agency (BP Migas) said. The country`s oil production showed an upward trend in recent months, BP Migas Chief Priyono said on Thursday. “We are optimistic that the oil production target of 977,000 bpd set in the 2008 state budget can be achieved at the end of this year,” he said. He said PT Chevron Pacific Indonesia`s oil production which accounted for 40 percent of the country`s oil output would fall during the dry season. In July, the country`s oil and condesate production reached 985,426 bpd compared to 982,326 bpd a month earlier, he said. He further said the country`s gas production in the January-July 2008 period reached 7,489 cubic feet per day (MMSCFD). The figure was recorded at 7,519 MMSCFD in July and 7,662 MMSCFD in June, he said. He said he was optimistic the country`s gas production target of 7,800 MMSCF for this year could be achieved although the current gas production figure had fallen short of the target. Menurut PRNewswire, rugi bersih mencapai US$5,74 per saham selama kuartal kedua, bandingkan dengan perolehan pendapatan US$252,3 juta atau US$1,85 tahun sebelumnya. Meski begitu, jika biaya itu dikeluarkan, perusahaan meraup laba US$276 juta atau US$2,11 per saham, mengalahkan estimasi rata-rata 19 analis Bloomberg. MasterCard sempat meraih kenaikan enam kali di perdagangan New York sejak Chief Executive Officer Robert Selander mengambil alih perusahaan Mei 2006. Hampir separuh dari pendapatan perusahaan berasal dari luar negeri. “Penyelesaian dengan American Express menghilangkan keraguan kami atas kemampuan perusahaan mengatasi risiko signifikan dari litigasi itu,” kata David Hochstim, analis Buckingham Research Group New York. Hal ini diungkapkan Direktur Utama PPA Mohammad Syahrial seusai bertemu Plj. Menko Perekonomian Sri Mulyani Indrawati di Gedung AA. Maramis, Jakarta, hari ini. Dia menilai saat ini bukan waktu yang tepat untuk melelang aset tersebut, mengingat banyaknya kompetitor. Selain itu, sistem penjualan secara paket menjadi penyebab kurangnya minat pembeli. Untuk itu, tuturnya, PPA akan mengubah mekanisme penjualan tidak lagi per paket, melainkan secara eceran atau ritel. “Mungkin karena waktunya yang kurang pas,” jelasnya. Menanggapi hal tersebut, Dirjen Kekayaan Negara Hadiyanto menegaskan PPA harus mampu menjual aset negara sebelum perusahaan itu pada November mendatang. Menurut dia, Menkeu telah menetapkan harga dasar penjualan property negara tersebut sesuai dengan harga pasar dan Nilai Jual Objek Pajak (NJOP). “Misalnya, kalau market value 100, NJOP 110, maka yang dipakai 110. | Highway crash kills 10 in Colombia Posted: 31 Jul 2008 08:10 AM CDT Bogota (ANTARA News/Xinhua) - At least 10 died and eight people was injured on Wednesday when a bus and a cargo truck crashed in the department of Santander, north of Colombia. The accident occurred at 11:30 local time (1630 GMT) in the highway that connects the cities of Barrancabermeja and Bucaramanga, 270 km north from Bogota, Police said. The crash occurred in the locality of Puente Zarzal when the truck invaded the opposite track, the Police chief of the region of Magdalena Medio, Colonel Rafael Rojas told the press. Rescue teams transferred the injured to different hospitals in Barrancabermeja near to Bucaramanga, capital of Santander. “We don`t know if all the victims are from Barrancabermeja or from Bucaramanga,” Rojas said. Laba bersih naik menjadi US$480,5 juta kuartal kedua dari US$451,3 juta tahun sebelumnya. Angka profit itu mengalahkan estimasi para analis. Pendaftaran perusahaan-perusahaan di AS pada program Medicare naik hampir dua kali lipat dari tahun lalu menjadi 350.000. Juga keanggotaan Medicaid tumbuh lebih dari 500.000 dari tahun lalu. “Aetna merupakan perusahaan terbaik dalam mengelola kesehatan. Mereka lebih peduli dibandingkan dengan pesaingnya, sementara pasar menginginkan produk dengan harga yang lebih murah,” kata Matt Perry, analis Wachovia Securities New York. Pada kuartal kedua, pendapatan naik 15% menjadi 7,83 miliar, disumbang oleh pembelian Medicaid oleh Schaller Anderson Inc, Phoenix.
