EU not consistent with its flight ban: Indonesian ministry

Posted: 25 Jul 2008 02:50 PM CDT

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Indonesian Transportation Ministry said the European Union (EU) is not consistent in imposing a flight ban on all Indonesian airlines.

“Why did it impose a flight ban on all Indonesian airlines? Not all the Indonesian airlines are willing to fly to Europe. In fact, not all airlines from other countries are also banned from flying to the continent. So, the ban is not consistent from the standpoint of its target,” the head of the ministry`s public communications center, Bambang S Ervan, said here Friday.

Citing an example, he said, only one airline from war-torn Afghanistan was banned from flying to European destinations, he said.

“That is strange,” he said.

The same was also true with a Kalita Air plane which had a serious accident while taking off from Brussels airport in Belgium on May 25, 2008. But EU did not impose any sanction on the American cargo plane, he said.

EU imposed the flight ban on the Indonesian airlines in July 2007, citing unsafe flights as a reason.

On Thursday, EU representative Pierre Phillipe said the EU could not yet lift its flight ban on all the Indonesian airlines which it said still fell short of the flight safety standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Indonesia is an ICAO member.

One Danish soldier killed, three injured in Afghanistan

Posted: 25 Jul 2008 01:10 PM CDT

Copenhagen (ANTARA News/AFP) - A Danish soldier serving with NATO-led forces in Afghanistan was killed and three others were wounded when their tank was damaged in a roadside blast, military officials said Friday.

The soldiers were involved in a clash with insurgents when their tank ran over a land mine or other type of explosive, the Danish military high command said in a statement.

The Danish troops had been assisting Afghan soldiers and their US and British advisors who came under attack in the north of troubled Hellmand province in southern Afghanistan.

Defence Minister Soeren Gade expressed “yet again my great respect” for Danish soldiers who “are making a remarkable effort under difficult conditions” to secure “the future of Afghanistan and of Denmark and the rest of the world.”

NATO`s International Security Assistance Force said Friday that one of its soldiers had been killed and two injured in clashes in the southern province of Hellmand on Thursday, without revealing their nationalities.

The British Ministry of Defence said Friday that a British army dog handler and his explosives sniffer dog had been killed in the province on Thursday, while six other soldiers had been injured.

Most NATO troops in Helmand are British but Denmark has more than 550 soldiers in the province under British command.

Since Denmark began sending troops to Afghanistan 15 of its troops have been killed there, one of the highest per capita death tolls among coalition forces.

Nearly 140 foreign soldiers have lost their lives in Afghanistan this year, most of them in unrest.

Interest in Garuda in Beijing unaffected by EU flight ban

Posted: 25 Jul 2008 11:10 AM CDT

Beijing (ANTARA News) - The interest of people in Beijing in flying by Garuda Indonesia aircraft remained unaffected by the European Union`s flight ban imposed on all Indonesian airline companies.

“The still effective flight ban of the EU has yet to affect the interest of people in Beijing to use Garuda Indonesia aircraft. Anything is running well,” General Manager of Garuda Indonesia Beijing office Pikri Ilham K said here on Friday.

According to him, as the decision to maintain the ban was only made several years ago, not many people in China know about it. Therefore, the occupancy rate of Garuda Indonesia was still normal.

Furthermore, he said although the EU banned all carriers of Indonesia from flying to Europe, the people of China took no notice of the decision.

“That is an outdated issue and perhaps some of Chinese communities have no knowledge of the flight ban. In fact, Garuda Indonesia remains carrying passengers in a big number,” he said.

According to him, the UE flight ban was not the main issue for Chinese people, because Garuda Indonesia kept on improving security and flight system of its aircraft.

Garuda Indonesia in Beijing was still intensifying the promotion of the cultural potentials of Indonesia which also promoted Garuda as official flight carrier for the Beijing-Jakarta route.

In the meantime, the load factor of Garuda Indonesia serving the Beijing-Jakarta route reached an average of 80 percent and could compete with the airline companies of other countries.

Garuda Indonesia flies over the Beijing-Jakarta route three times a week, and the interest of people both Indonesians and foreigners to fly by Garuda remains high. (*)

Indonesia regrets prolongation of EU flight ban

Posted: 25 Jul 2008 08:50 AM CDT

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesia deplores the continuation of the European Union (EU)`s ban on Indonesian airline flights in its air space despite the improvements made in their safety standards over the past few months, Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesman Teuku Faizasyah said here Friday.

“We have done everything to comply with their recommendations but we did not get an appropriate response,” he said.

The improvements Indonesia had made in air service operators` and regulator`s performance had reached 60 percent of International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) requirements. It was thus reasonable for Indonesia to expect an improvement in the EU`s attitude, he said.

“We regretted the unilateral ban since the very beginning. It was imposed without prior consultation with Indonesia. The EU`s judgement disappoints us,” Faizasyah said.

Indonesia`s seriousness in striving to improve the performance of its air service operators and regulator was also shown by the fact that Marwoto Komar, a former Garuda captain pilot, was now on trial over a Garuda aircraft crash at Yogyakarta`s Adisutjipto airport in 2007, he said.

The EU imposed its ban on 51 Indonesian airlines for safety reasons in July 2007.(*)
